Millions of fans know the late King of Pop from his music and videos, but, for a select group of South Coast natives with backstage perspectives, Michael Jackson was a timid phenom who was devoted to his craft.

Singer Ralph Tavares, drummer Jackie Santos and photographer Anthony Barboza had front-row seats as the young man took the steps that would lead him to superstardom. They were watching as the 19-year-old Jackson made the transition to a solo artist with the smash album "Off the Wall" in the late 1970s.

The band Tavares that began in New Bedford in the '70s included Santos on drums. Tavares and The Jackson Five were often touring mates, and the Jacksons built a brotherhood with them. But when it came time to hang out in the hotel or backstage, or to play basketball together, Michael was always returning to his room to practice his moves.
Tavares

"He was constantly practicing, all the time," recalled Ralph Tavares, who now is assistant chief court officer at New Bedford Superior Court.

"He was always thinking about his performance and had a vision of what he wanted to become in the music business. He was shy and friendly but very dedicated. Everyone around him knew early on that he was going to be a big star."

Santos, who lives in New Bedford and teaches at Berklee College of Music, recalls the first time he saw Jackson perform — the opening date of their tour at the Houston Astrodome in 1977. The Jacksons closed the show after a set from Tavares.

"After our show, most of the guys went back to the hotel, but I stayed backstage to see what Michael was all about. He came out during the first song with a microphone cable that must have been about 200 feet long. When he came onstage to join his brothers, he did this spin move that wrapped him up in the cord directly at center stage. When he hit center stage he immediately shook off the cord in one move and it landed at his feet in a perfect circle. People backstage were screaming 'Did you just see that?' I was so engulfed by what he was doing, I couldn't believe what I was seeing, someone that talented.

"After the show, I went back to the hotel room, got down on my knees and asked the Lord to give me one ounce of the talent that Michael has and I would be fine."

"When Tavares went on stage, we got a rise out of the audience," Ralph Tavares said. "But Michael Jackson came onstage and did one spin and 50,000 people went crazy."

Tavares' relationship with Michael and the Jacksons allowed them to get a preview of "Off the Wall." On a plane ride to South America where they were scheduled to perform, the band and its entourage got to hear the album before it made its way to record stores and radio.
Tavares

"The first time we heard it we thought it was incredible," Tavares recalled. "We knew he was destined to go on to something spectacular."

In 1979, Anthony Barboza, a New Bedford High graduate who went on to become an internationally renowned photographer, making portraits of such luminaries as Academy Award winners Halle Berry and Cher, got an opportunity to do a shoot of Jackson.
1979

"We had heard that he was very quiet and didn't talk much," recalled Barboza, who now lives on Long Island. "When he came to do the shoot, he brought his little sister with him who was 9 or 10 years old and was interested in coloring books. Years later I was told that she was his sister Janet."

Jackson said little during the session, but the shoot took a turn when Barboza asked him if he would do some dance moves for the camera.

"He became a different person when he started dancing. He changed. It was like he came to life," Barboza recalled.

Another development during the session was when Jackson's assistant brought some newspaper clippings — pictures of children — to the star's attention. "He said to Michael, 'Michael, look at these pictures.' I thought it was interesting but I didn't think much of it at the time."

But the photo session would become relevant many years later.

"When we were doing the shoot, I adjusted the lighting and put him on a stool," Barboza said. "I had an intuition — when I saw his shadow on the backdrop, I thought, 'Oh, this is just perfect, the shadow looks like that of a little boy.' I didn't think much of it through the years — it was unpublished and not part of my portfolio — but as the years went by and you started hearing about Michael and children, I thought it was kind of ironic that that portrait of him cast a shadow, which represents to me the childhood he never had."

"Michael gave up a lot for success," Tavares said. "Some people who are truly blessed never last on this Earth that long. Fame can be a lot to handle and you have to sacrifice. He gave up a lot for success."
