Nineteen hundred ninety three started out to be one of the best years ever for Michael Jackson. His latest release, Dangerous，was still selling steadily around the world, well over a year after its release. "Heal the world", the sixth single released from Dangerous, was just entering the pop and R&B singles charts. The Dangerous tour was scheduled to begin a set of Asian dates in late summer with money raised at each stop going to he Heal the World Foundation. Of Course there were lots and lots of awards to be accepted, records to set, and "firsts" to achieve, in other words, it was business as usual for Michael Jackson. More significantly, Michael Jackson would finally begin an attempt to shed his media shy image, becoming more accessible to the media and the public. No one could have ever guessed the year would take such a startling twist and end on such a disturbing, painful, note.

Michael participated in two festivities celebrating the inauguration of President Bill Clinton. The day following the American Music Awards, Michael was preparing for his next public performance, which would be in less than one week. On January 27, he attended a press conference to accept donations to his Heal the World Foundation. When Super Bowl Sunday, January 31, finally arrived Michael dazzled the fans at the Rosebowl and millions of television viewers with the most spectacular halftime show ever produced. His performance began similarly to his Dangerous tour performances, with Michael exploding onto the stage only to stand absolutely motionless with the crowd cheered out of control. He started off with "Jam", dressed all in black and gold performing meticulously timed and synchronized choreography with his back up dancers. Removing his black military jacket and adding a black fedora, he re-created an abbreviated version of his unforgettable performance of "Billie Jean" from Motown 25. An equally exciting performance of "Black or White" followed. Children the surrounded Michael on stage for "Heal the world" while a gigantic globe inflated from the center of the stage. Unveiling children's drawings made up of individual cards held up by each section of fans in the stands, Michael addressed the crowd briefly and performed "Heal the World". Michael Jackson, as usual, mesmerized his audience with a performance delivered with more energy than most people expend in a year.

Continuing his media blitz, it was announced that Michael Jackson had agreed to a live ninety minute Interview with Oprah Winfrey. The interview was said to be Michael's idea, and he agreed to discuss anything, though he didn't want it to be one of those "look at how many cars he has" kind of thing. Oprah reportedly had lost of footage of Michael's career handy to help fill time in case Michael turned out not to be too talkative. It wasn't necessary though as Michael was eager to dispel the many falsehoods about him that have been circulated, and believed, for many years. He refused to answer only two questions. One asking for a response to some of the allegations made by latoya in her book, to which Michael said he couldn't answer because he honestly hadn't read the book. The only other question he refused to answer was whether or not he was still a virgin, at which he became quite embarrassed, "How could you ask me that?", and said only "I'm a gentleman". He did allow however that he has been in love, twice, with Brooke Shields and "one other girl".

To those who believed he bleached his dark skin, he revealed that he actually suffers from a skin disorder that destroys that pigmentation of the skin. After finally saying that he is not aware of anything that can actually bleach skin, he revealed further that the stories that he bleached his skin because he did not want to be black or was ashamed to be black, hurt him, that the skin disorder was a problem for him and something he couldn't control. Makeup is used to help even out blotches that are caused on the skin. He pointed out that people don't think anything however, of someone who will sit in the sun for hours to change the color of their skin, to become something they are not.

Some speculated that is his future albums continued to sell as well as his previous efforts, the contract could generate a billion dollars in revenue for Sony. During its first few months of release, in late 1991 and early 1992, it was selling at a faster pace than did Thriller, the biggest selling album of all time ,and Bad the second best selling album of all time. The Boss, Bruce Springsteen, has been popular with the working class for just as long. Barbra Streisand, while not having a cute nickname, has had a string of successes over many years as well, and is widely regarded as a legend.

After narrating a tribute to her brother, " How To Become A Legend", Janet brought Michael on stage from his front row seat at the Shrine Auditorium, "Now I'm very happy to present the Grammy Legend Award for 1993 to my big brother, Michael Jackson." But when you grow up as I did in front of 100 million people since the age of 5, you're automatically different. The last few weeks I have been cleansing myself and it has been a rebirth for myself, it's like a cleansing spirit. My childhood was completely taken away from me. There was no Christmas, no birthdays. It was not a normal childhood, no normal pleasure of childhood. Those were exchanged for hard work struggle and pain, and eventual material and professional success. But as an awful price, I cannot recreate that part of my life. Nor would I change any part of my life. However, today when I create my music I feel like an instrument of nature. I wonder what delight nature feels when we open our hearts and express our God given talents. The sound of approval rolls across the universe and the whole world abounds in magic. Wonder fills our hearts for we have glimpsed for an instant the play fulness of life.
